BLURB

Winter is drawing thick in 1932 Shanghai, as is the ever-nearing threat of a Japanese invasion.

Rosalind Lang has suffered the worst possible fate for a national spy: she’s been exposed. With the media storm camped outside her apartment for the infamous Lady Fortune, she’s barely left her bedroom in weeks, plotting her next course of action after Orion was taken and his memories of Rosalind wiped. Though their marriage might have been a sham, his absence hurts her more than any physical wound. She won’t rest until she gets him back.

But with her identity in the open, the task is near impossible. The only way to leave the city and rescue Orion is under the guise of a national tour. It’s easy to convince her superiors that the countryside needs unity more than ever, and who better than an immortal girl to stir pride and strength into the people?

When the tour goes wrong, however, everything Rosalind once knew is thrown up in the air. Taking refuge outside Shanghai, old ghosts come into the open and adversaries turn to allies. To save Orion, they must find a cure to his mother’s traitorous invention and take this dangerous chemical weapon away from impending foreign invasion—but the clock is ticking, and if Rosalind fails, it’s not only Orion she loses, but her nation itself.

REVIEW

Or just my ranting?

I read this book solely because I want to see what happen between Orion and Rosalind. Especially with what happen in the previous book. Obviously this book is a mess (like a good mess) because what happen here is feels like a roller coaster.

This book has so many POV from all the characters, I’m not really fan of this multi (too many) POV for a book but maybe it is necessary for the book so we can know what really happen in other places too. Many POV means we see what happen at the other places because too much happening at once.

Despite Orion and Rosalind as the main character on this book, I think other characters have the nearly the same “screen time” on this book and I’m not protest because I believe the other characters too need the same happy ending we wish too see on Orion and Rosalind.

The plot is crazy, it can not give me a small peace because there is always something happening. The action is packed, the war is intense and I can feel the desperation on these characters because when they finally save someone, then the other will be caught. So yes, rescues continue to occur between them.

War isn’t a place for heroes, Rosalind. War is a place for survival until those above us have tired us out.

I personally love this book just for the characters, I just want to see what happen to them. Especially Orion and Rosalind who faced many twist in front of them. Orion with no memories, Rosalind with surprising condition, moment of death and the list go on. And I fell in love again with Orion and Rosalind relationship. Despite Orion with no memories, he still affected toward Rosalind. Their love is really one of the best. How they without hesitation risk their lives for others. And I can’t forget the feeling I got while reading the last 10% of books, so many emotions and I can’t predict what will happen to them later on.

The sky itself says I love you. I have loved you since we weren’t actually married, and I can’t bear another day living in a falsity. Please, Rosalind, put me out of my misery.

I give this book rate 4.5/5 I love the characters and how the author end this book. The conflict is great, the execution is great and every twist makes this book even better. I strongly suggest you to read the These Violent Delights series to understand more about the world and surely didn’t want to spoiled about that book.
